Slovakia ranked among the most successful European Union countries in the recycling of plastic packaging waste in 2023. With a recycling rate of 54.1%, we significantly exceed the EU average (42.1%) and belong to the European leaders in this area. These figures come from the official statistics of the EU Statistical Office – Eurostat, based on data reported by individual Member States. Data for the Slovak Republic are submitted by the Ministry of the Environment as part of regular European reporting.
This result demonstrates that the extended producer responsibility system, fully financed by producers in Slovakia since 2016, delivers real and measurable outcomes.
Behind this figure is the long-term cooperation of producers, municipalities, collection companies and citizens who sort waste responsibly and correctly.
Our organization, NATUR-PACK, believes there is still room for further progress and for gradually increasing recycling rates for other materials that are part of municipal waste and fall under the extended producer responsibility system. These include paper, glass, metal packaging and beverage cartons.
